Equiping communities with practical skills in advocacy, leadership, and resource mobilization
The Community Advocacy Program is at the heart of the Bash Global Initiative’s mission to empower people and build lasting change. We believe that communities know their challenges best and, with the right skills and support, can also create the solutions.
This program gives Ugandans the knowledge, tools, and confidence to raise their voices, claim their rights, and lead the change they want to see. By encouraging self-reliance, civic participation, and local leadership, the program helps communities grow stronger, more resilient, and more dignified.
At Bash Global Initiative, we dream of a society where every person, no matter their background has access to resources, opportunities, and support to live a dignified life. Our approach is community-driven, shaped by both global best practices and local stories of success. Studies show that when communities lead, projects last longer and bring deeper impact than top-down solutions.
Through training in advocacy, problem-solving, leadership, and resource mobilization, we equip communities to engage with decision-makers and tackle urgent needs such as healthcare, education, and livelihoods. Advocacy, in our view, is not just for policymakers or big organizations, it is a tool for everyone.
The Challenge
Many Ugandan communities face barriers that limit access to education, healthcare, clean water, and economic opportunities. Too often, this leaves people feeling powerless. The Community Advocacy Program exists to change that.
Its purpose is to give communities a platform to identify their most urgent needs, voice their concerns, and push for long-term, sustainable solutions. By shifting from dependency to ownership to build resilience, justice, and equity at the grassroots level.
Our Approach
Our advocacy approach is practical, people-centered, and impact-driven. Communities are engaged through the following activities:
- Educational Workshops – Trainings on understanding policies, effective communication, and grassroots campaign organization.
- Case Studies & Success Stories – Sharing inspiring community-led initiatives through our “Community Call-Home” series, offering models that others can replicate.
- Partnerships – Collaborating with local governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to amplify community voices and shape inclusive policies.
- Resource Mobilization – Supporting projects identified by communities themselves, from water and sanitation initiatives to youth empowerment and food security programs.
Each activity creates a ripple effect—equipping more leaders, inspiring collective action, and ensuring that advocacy grows from within the community.
Goals and Objectives
- To train and mentor 136 community advocates from 136 districts from underserved neighborhoods within 5 years, focusing on one key advocacy issue in each area.
- To increase community participation in public forums and decision-making by at least 25% within the first 2 to 3 years.
- To support at least a community-led advocacy project from the 136 districts in Uganda that bring real improvements, such as new WASH facilities or food security initiatives.
- To complete the first program phase and evaluate its impact within the first 12 to 15 months.
